California Snow
by Matthew Labrecque

As I tried to stand on the trunk of a car
damaged from years of the sun smiling on it,
my feet slipped out from under me.

As I fell torwards the ground
which was covered by a fresh snow,
I thought about how earlierI was sitting
in the warmth of my apartment.

I had been sipping coffee from my mug
looking out at people struggling to clear the snow,
dreading of the timewhen I too
would be trying to free my car
from the snowbank which had eaten it.

When I hit the ground, I stared up at the sky
snow still falling onto my face.
I had sprained my finger in my tumble from grace,
maybe California wouldn’t be so bad a place.
